‘A Transport of Sustainability’ was created for the Common Book The Creative Habit by Twyla Tharp. The piece encourages creative and sustainable thinking in combining the freedom and practicality of campus bike transport, with a novel application of solar energy. The tree’s leaves are comprised of ten small solar panels which power an LED bulb. This bulb is activated at night, casting light on the bicycles. The bicycles lock into the tree’s ‘root system’ in the same way as with a traditional bike rack. The piece is meant to influence the public’s behavioral approach to nonpolluting and human scaled travel. This is a friendly and welcome reminder to use all types of energy in a conscientious manner.
